For those who enjoy the performing arts, Gainesville has much to offer. There are several local theatre, dance, and music organizations that feature frequent performances in a variety of locations. The University of Florida Center for the Performing Arts is home to several local performance groups and also hosts Broadway touring companies, opera, symphony orchestras and nationally-known performers. In addition, there is the Acrosstown Repertory Theatre, which features a wide variety of creative productions, and the Hippodrome State Theater, one of North Florida's only professional regional theatres.

Originally founded to perform during the United State's bicentennial year, the Gainesville Civic Chorus is still going strong. The Gainesville Community Band is one of the area's most popular groups. Founded in 1974, the band is featured at Gainesville's annual Fanfares and Fireworks each July, and plays in various other concerts throughout the year. All concerts are free.

Since its inception in 1980, the Acrosstown Repertory Theatre has provided Gainesville and Alachua County with a unique and innovative cultural experience. There are many opportunities for exploring acting, writing, directing, and production for many diverse sectors of our community, especially for those who otherwise might not enjoy such opportunities. The Hippodrome State Theatre is one of North Florida's only professional regional theatres. It has been designated as a Cultural Institution and a State Theatre of Florida. A cornerstone of the artistic life of North Florida, the Hippodrome is also a landmark of the downtown Gainesville landscape, occupying a beautifully restored historic building built in 1911. It has a mainstage, where plays are performed, and a cinema for the showing of films.

Gainesville Community Play House, the area's oldest theatre, began more than 50 years ago. The play house is housed in a refurbished 160-seat theatre adjacent to Millhopper Shopping Center. The all-volunteer group performs six plays each year.
